Schalke were dumped out of the Europa League last night after two extra time goals from Ajax ensured the Dutch club won the tie 4-3 on aggregate. Leon Goretzka and Guido Burgstaller were on target for Schalke in the space of three minutes in normal time as they leveled things up. It was meant to be an uphill task for Ajax as they were reduced to 10 men as Joel Veltman was sent of in the 80th minute.

Caligiuri celebrates after scoring Schalke’s third as they seemed to have won the tie

Schalke did as expected and used their one-man advantage to go 3-0 up on the first half of extra time thanks to Daniel Caligiuri. Ajax, however, fought back and were gifted as Nick Viergever scored to give the away side an advantage on away goals. The away goal advantage didn’t matter anymore as Amin Younes scored Ajax’s second of the night to end the tie 3-2 on the night and 4-3 on aggregate in their favour.
